There's a charming smile here that you asked for. But I hope you know this hurts every part of my face. Just like every other time, you'll pick it up & kiss it to death because, darling, that's just you. Just like the rest, this night will run: "One more drink and my last cigarette, and I'm anyone's. If anyone will take me home." You're not as dark as you think you are. You've made yourself up to sleep round on dirty floors. Here starts the small talk for each awkward moment we have to pass. There's safety in numbers; you've proved that more or less. Well I'll make small talk when necessary. You came alone again, naturally. Small talk when necessary because we won't talk like this again.

If everything I touched turned to gold, who'd be left here to have and to hold? Until we're all swept away on tidal waves of broken glass in a moment that will all too quickly pass. But I don't need your money or to be the only one you'll ever love. Just a picture and a postcard of where you are, and a note that reads 'It's you I'm thinking of'. So once around the roller-rink for safety's sake. I know we're old friends but I'm tired of waiting.

The start: it's another long night and I'm already tired. I haven't slept right in weeks now, so there's no question why I didn't even want to come out tonight. Once we figured things out you made it look so easy to shrug this off and put it down to you and your fading attempt to be young and reckless because you've already bitten off more than you could chew. The end: I'd like to say we told things straight but that would be lying. We haven't spoken in months now but asking is worth a try; "Won't you take me out? 'Cause I'm alone tonight". Once we figured things out you made it look so easy to shrug this off and put it down to you and your fading attempt to be young and reckless because you've already bitten off more than you could chew. I shouldn't care. It won't ever come to this. It's only points you'll miss. It won't ever come to this.

Windy drives on misty mornings. The car: cold and damp but full of friends. And we're staying ahead of the weather. When a display of such dishonesty makes you uneasy, and he's throwing punch after punch and every insult under the sun…I'll wait to see you notice me. I don't want to be a footnote for this anymore. Is this really what it's come to? Your small-town mind can keep those values, because I'm over and I'm outlined.

Looking less than your best - oversized sweater, cigarette in hand. A nothing town in which to settle down and work the best years of your life away. But there has to be so much more than this because these lines don't nearly tell the truth. And this time I'm beginning to see the clues. There's a space just below your right eye that I know gives it all away. We drove this car not missing a spot in town, your feet on the dashboard all the way down. But there has to be so much more than this because these lines don't nearly tell the truth. And this time I'm beginning to see the clues. A rain so hard it weathers buildings around us and drenches the old t-shirt you've borrowed from my bedroom floor. We'll arrive back home, soaked to the bone and worse for wear…but drying out for tomorrow. Tell me, tell me why you're talking so loud. The walls in my old room talk much more than we ever will again, and we never did.
